Instructions

This cap is for one size. I'm experimenting with the seam allowances to make the hat bigger... I have a friend who wants me to make him a hat to fit. So experimenting and getting these hat sizes down to a science will be interesting. Fun part is.. you can use all kinds of prints for these.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Unisex

Materials

Cotton print from my stash

What was your inspiration?

I didn't know what a welder's cap was... I told a friend that I've been sewing a lot lately, and he immediately asked me to sew up some welders caps. I had to look them up, find a pattern, and a tutorial, and just got around to it. The cap is worn backwards under the welding mask or hard hat to protect the head and neck from stray sparks.

These are my first two attempts. I used the blue print from my stash (I have yards of this). For fun, I added the AMH strip thinking maybe it would work... looks great with the print, but AMH (Anna Marie Horner) strips are all very feminine even if they are just chevrons! lol That's OK, there's probably a girl welder (sounds so sexist... help me out here) that would like this... If not, I do, and I may be sporting it.

What are you most proud of?

matching the stripes... and how the bill turned out with the little edge showing.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

These weren't so difficult.. Once I figure out how to accurately sew the right size hat, I'll let you know.

VERY cute!! I think I might have to make one of these for my 9 year old son! He might actually wear it and it will keep his neck from getting burnt. Thanks for sharing!

I sewed a 2 1/2" strip on my main fabric before I cut out the hat and brim pieces, if you want to do it like I did. This pattern lends itself to such variety, you should have a good time with it.
