What was your inspiration?

My son was getting married and they wanted to do something different than having guests sign a book. I had seen many different ideas, but saw a quilt in our local fabric store that they had their vacationing guests sign a quilt block and then put the quilt together for each year. I decided this would fit their western/country theme. We used the bandanas that were used for decoration and for napkins (washed of course) to make alternating blocks with the signature blocks.

What are you most proud of?

I love the way the edge came out. Because the bandana blocks were cut on the bias, the quilt edge was a bit out of whack, so instead of binding the quilt edge which would have been a bit of a nightmare, I just sewed the edges of the dark brown border together and hemmed the remaining border and left as a ruffle. Easy, fabulous look and very different.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

You could create a theme by having only certain colors of fabric pens used. Also before cutting the muslin into the size blocks you want, iron the muslin to butcher paper (waxed side) then cut them out. This gives the block stability for writing. The paper comes right off, but really makes this much easier. I then used a water soluble marking pen to mark off the seam allowances so that people would not write outside the marks. Also when marking the seam allowances, I created a template; cut a stiff cardboard into the block shape and then cut out slim strips where you want the seams to be marked. This way you can just lay the template over the block and mark away. No using a ruler, very easy and it went very quickly.
