Wedding Dress

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic, Formal / Bridal, Romantic

Materials

Polyester duchess satin, taffeta underlining, anti-static lining and tulle. Bodice in silk organza and tulle. Embroidered tulle and lace trim. Pearl and diamante buttons.

What was your inspiration?

My daughter's wedding!

What are you most proud of?

The sheer amount of time I took over this, and working out how to get the underpinnings and outer layers all working together! All the lace had to be cut into separate motifs and handsewn onto the tulle to get the right proportions for my tiny daughter. We had seen that in most of the dresses she tried on in shops, she was swamped by the quantity of lace, or by the proportions of the skirt. I was also inordinately delighted by the bustled effect when the dress was adjusted for dancing!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't be daunted: all these couture techniques are well worth the time, and all the prep. No one believed I'd made the dress myself!

A beautiful bride in a stunning dress. You did a great job, espcially with the lace and also working out how to do that bustle I am impressed. Way better than anything I have seen in the bridal shops!

Thanks- that's really kind! The bustle isn't hard really, it's just trial and error to keep pinning it until the hem hangs level and you get the movement you want. It has 3 pieces of doubled over ribbon, which tie in 6 bows for security- all the layers made the dress quite heavy!

Thankyou- the fit, tbh, was easy, she's a tiny close-to-stock size...proprtion was the key in my opinion, to ensure the dress didn't wear her! I was very very picky about the lace chosen, and the amount of it- it drove her crazy!

WOW! What a fantastic dress and it was so interesting to read about the construction. I love it when you have to work out a puzzle, for me that is the best bit of sewing, especially when you get such fab results as yours. I love the effect you created with the train for when she was dancing, was this your idea? Wonderful. I hope your daughter is enjoying married life as much as she clearly enjoyed her day. Well done, Mum!

Thanks again! The bustle is one of several standard types, it was the version she preferred. It's done with 2 rows of ribbons which tie together inside. Depending on the fullness and weight of the skirt, you can get away with one tie, or may need more. I sewed on 3 pairs of ribbons [some blue!] so that I actually had 6 ties for absolute security and to spread the weight of the skirt, which was quite heavy with all the layers.

Me too [although it was horrible to fasten!] I got the idea of diamante buttons spaced out with pearl from a dress in a bridal shop. The first batch of buttons I sewed on [all 60] were slightly too large and would not lie straight, so I found the square ones, which were cheap and cheerful. The 10 diamante buttons cost me 15 which was alarming!

The dress looks beautifully made. Your daughter must be so proud of you and your work. I have a daughter whom is engaged to be married so I am also practicing the couture tecniques from this course to hopefully make her dress.

Thank you- the course is well worth the time- I have been sewing for years, and have made wedding dresses before, but this was a completely different experience. The hand basting etc takes a long time [although in fact the pressing took longer!] but paid off in the finished results.
