Wedding Cake

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Fondant Frills »

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Other

Style: Romantic

Materials

Fondant, wire, tape, lustre dust, edible gold paint

What was your inspiration?

Maggie Austin's Fondant Frills class and I had seen a photograph of a beautiful couture wedding gown covered in ruffles and frills and with gold bands.

What are you most proud of?

The bottom tier took a lot of work - I wanted to make the ruffled roses very fine so it meant a lot of layers! It also was my first attempt at Maggie's rose - it needs a bit more practice!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I started making the rose rather late the night before I needed it - I would definitely recommend giving yourself much more time! I also am quite inexperienced in doing flowers so I probably was a bit ambitious trying to make it in just a few hours without enough drying time between assembling the different sections!

Beautiful design! How long did it take you to finish the bottom tier with the ruffled flowers?

Hi Pearl - Thanks. I really can't remember exactly how long that bottom tier took, but several hours! If I was doing it again I probably would not have made the ruffles so thin and maybe spread them out a bit more so I did not need to go around quite so many times. It is a nice effect, but rather time-consuming.

Many thanks. Bit of a labour of love doing these ruffle "roses".

I used Maggie Austin's technique and adapted it to an online tutorial on ruffles from www.sharonwee.com.au.

Thank you so much for the encouraging comments! I usually just do cakes for the grandkids so a bit out of my comfort zone but thanks to you for being such a great teacher and inspiring us all to stretch ourselves!
