Sewing With Knits: 5 Wardrobe Essentials »

Instructions

I knitted a skirt but didn't want to have a double layer of knitted fabric with elastic at the waist. I came across Candace Eisner Strick's idea of sewing on a waistband (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0jsyyOhuPw). So I used my skillz from this class to create a waistband and sewed it onto the skirt with a simple zigzag. Not too worried about the contrast waistband since I will NEVER be tucking ...

I'm also a knitter. Great use of two related skills! Your skirt is beautiful!

Thank you! I'm pleased with how it turned out. Quite comfortable, and it hangs nicely, with a nice drape and bias.

Your skirt looks awesome! I've made 2 lanesplitter skirts... if I make another, I am SO doing this. Thanks for the great idea!

Let's thank Candace! I was thrilled to find her how-to video. Lanesplitter is also in my queue. :)

Very cool! Is he pattern for the skirt "Lanesplitter"? Did you have any difficulty with your knitting getting caught on your sewing machine?

It's similar to Lanesplitter but it's actually called Swirl Skirt, I think, from Interweave Knits. The main difference is the short-row flouncies at the bottom. I was nervous about using the sewing machine on it but no, no problem! I sewed it with the knitted fabric on top, like top stitching, while I pulled the jersey waistband toward me section by section. I made the waistband pretty snug because the weight of the skirt tugs down on it.

Thanks! The waistband is a great idea--not my idea, but I'll likely use it for more than one thing. Easy and cheap to sew my own waistband, and faster than knitting one!
