This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sewing With Knits: 5 Wardrobe Essentials »

Instructions

This dress was created using the Craftsy Online Course with Meg. I watched the entire course and then decided to tackle knits. Her lessons were fabulous.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic

Materials

Wool Jersey Leopard Print, Vogue Pattern 8825 View B - Size 16 I am usually a 20., 3.0 Yards of fabric, Sewing with Knits online Course - on my Samsung Tablet, Baby Lock Walking Foot, Schmetz Jersey Needle 80/12, Schmetz Stretch Twin Needle 4,0/75, 1/4 clear elastic, Baby Lock Serger, Janome Coverstich with hem guide

What was your inspiration?

I just had to have a fabulous wrap dress for fall and winter. Once I watched Meg's course online I decided to break out and give knits a try. I have a great stash (patterns 426 and fabric 18 large tubs) and decided to do up the wool jersey leopard print into a long-sleeve faux wrap dress for thre fall and winter months. I love the new Vogue Pattern 8825 and so the process began.

This dress is VERY EASY

I am a member of PatternReview.com and we all have noticed the CRAZY pictures and poises used for the new fall 2012 patterns. So we are to duplicate the crazy poise. Thus my wierd foot .....

Check me out on pattern review at:

http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=78825

What are you most proud of?

That I tackled knits and conquered. That I am now using my cover stitch machine!

I have a whole new world of knits open to me for 2013.........

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch the entire class online, Make notes.

Then when you are all done just jump in....really Meg really can take you through your garment and make it fun! Yes fun!

I have always used wovens and even do couture but knits and my cover stitch machine were my greatest fear.....not now I am on to my next knit project. Butterick 5318. Thanks Meg!

Beautiful dress! I'm your same size, and wondered how attrative a wrap dress would be - glad to know it's pretty awesome :) I'm up for this same class next - looking forward to it (provided I can find some nice knits!).

Beautiful. It's holiday break time, so time to get on with this class! A black/white leopard print knit is hanging in my sewing room waiting on me to get made. Here we go . . .

Really nice. Love the leopard print. My leopard print hoodie has become a favorite in my wardrobe. I was just given some tiger print knit fabric. That should make a wild looking top. LOL!

This dress would be flattering on many figure types. I am a plus size and it gives the illusion of a hourglass figure.

Beautiful dress!! Thank you for providing such detailed information about your materials. I've been wondering about the coverstitch hem guide as well. Good for you conquering you fear! :) A question: is wool jersey itchy at all? It looks like it drapes so well!

No this one is not but some blends can be itchy. Yes with coverstitch you really need hem guide as you stitch on the right side of hem and need to catch the folded piece. Keeps your stitches nice and straight.

Yes the guide really makes it easier as the materials right side is up and the unfinished edge is on the bottom and you want to catch the material on both the folded hem and the single fabric. Or you can baste where you would like the centre of the coverstich foot to go so that it catches both edges.

I love the dress - well done! I might have to try this pattern myself, it's a really nice one. I know what you mean about the posing for the Vogue patterns - I had a look the other day and I did feel sorry for the models balanced on the windowsills :-) I have a Janome coverstitch machine that I used for the first time with this course for the fleece hoodie. I am making the dress at the moment - does the hem guide make it easier? Should I think about buying one? Thanks, Lesley
