Instructions

So glad I'm learning to make a muslin! It's been incredibly educational. The pattern is pretty easy, and enough like what Susan is demonstrating that I'm tracking pretty well with her so far. I'm making very few adjustments to the pattern elements -- I'm thinking the back, at least for me, should be 3 panels instead of one. It's pleated but I'm still not loving it. Also, I'm adding pockets. ...

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic, Mod

Materials

shantung (polyester)

What was your inspiration?

Susan, the teacher for this course! She is wonderful. I found the lining first, then matched the shantung. One of them (the silver) is from April Johnston's Project Runway line for Jo-Ann's.

What are you most proud of?

That lining, and my pleats!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

If you have any interest in sewing at all, take this class. Even if you don't think you have the skills, Susan shows you EVERYTHING. And answers all your questions extremely fast!

New pics -- the dress is sewn and ready for the lining, which is also sewn and ready to be joined. I'm pretty happy, for my first dress ever. I love the zipper, which I think is a coat zipper -- I wanted something kind of edgy to keep it from looking "too twee," as someone said. I'm picturing it with strappy black booties, which I don't have or wear, but that's what I'm picturing...

Your fabrics are beautiful and I love the pattern you're using. I've bought this pattern too and I'm looking forward to making it once I've found a fabric

Thanks! Just posting some more pics today -- nearing the home stretch, though it's been one step forward, two steps back, and I'm not even doing the underlining!

No sleeves -- that was too much work! I'm going to your page to see if you posted pics yet...

can anyone tell me if the sizes are USA dress sizes which are different to the UK dress sizes

I think they have both US and UK sizes listed on the patterns -- go to the Vogue web site, I'm sure they have them listed there.

I am interested in taking this course but was wondering how you would fit the pattern to your own body? Is everyone using a dress form?

I didn't use one -- my daughter tried to help me make one from duct tape but it just didn't work for fitting something this nice. So I'm fitting it to myself, pinching the extra fabric with binder clips and just sort of "eyeballing" things. Truth is, I'm probably going to take it to a pro and some point and get it tailored. But at least I'll have most of a dress!

Good to know. I just signed up for the class and haven't received the pattern yet. I was getting disheartened looking at all the projects because I don't have a dress form and can't afford to get one, since I am an infrequent sewer anyway. I'll have to try the binder clip trick and get a friend to help me out! :)

Thanks for posting! I 'm through fitting the muslin, but dont have fabric yet! All i can find in Phoenix is polyester and no silk for the lining or interlining. So I ordered some online. I also ordered the big tracing paper, and the fork pins

No fabrics in Phoenix? How is that possible?? What are the fork pins for? Haven't gotten there yet...

Good idea to start posting photos of your fabrics so we can all see what the other class members are planning. Your colours are beautiful. I just posted mine too :)

In the printed instructions Susan lists a couple of similar patterns -- it's all basically the same except a different skirt detail and no middle band. The making is just the same, though! I found them all at JoAnns and bought 8511, a pattern Susan also knows very well.

Hi, how did you organize the alternative pattern with this course? I only get offered the original pattern 8648 as a choice. Thanks!

I'm so glad to know someone else doing the course! I got the fabrics at Jo-Ann's. I'm using another vogue pattern, 8511, which Susan offers as an alternative to the pattern she's using. I didn't think the band on the torso would be flattering on me, so I chose this one. Right now I'm wrestling to get my muslin the right size - I didn't realize pattern sizes were different from dress sizes! Your fabric sounds lovely.

Am I correct that you have chosen a pattern, other than the one that comes with the course, or was your project from a different session? Also, where did you get dotted lining? Susan recommends Silk Charmuse or China Silk and I have only found plain colors, mostly just white. I love your dotted fabric and would like to spice up my garment with a prettier lining as I have a deep dark plum colored lightweight wool. Thanks for posting your photos. I'm anxsious to start my project tomorrow!

Rebecca, sorry for the delay, I just saw your post to me today as it did not occur to me that I had to come back here to see it! So sorry. I'm in Toledo, OH. I did visit Denven, Colorado last weekend and went to Denver Fabrics there, and found a beautiful print silk charmeuse for my lining. So, I'm good to go. I also wish that this format sent me the email notice that I get when I'm in the classroom area and post comments or send private email. I'll try to watch back here for your reply.

Jackie I'm not always getting email notifications, either. And frustratingly, I can't post comments from the mobile site. Oh well -- I'm going to your page to see where you are in the process!
