1. For the front, I used the F hook and the Marquetry pattern (http://www.crochetpatty.com/patterns/thread/intarsio.html) with the following modifications:
Catch the beginning end in the first round of tcs. This eliminates needing to weave it in later. After row 6, repeat row 5. Then do another row like this, but increase the chains between to 11 stitches. Now repeat row 6 again, but use 8 chains between clusters. Put the new clusters in the top of the old ones (if you look closely at the white and yellow version, you can see how I did this). Only here did I do the final round of dcs, increasing the count from 6 to 9. This is the front.
For the back, I calculated that I needed 152 stitches around the outermost ring. Here’s how I got there with the G hook:
Magic circle with 8 sc. 12 sc (double stitches in every other sc, hence “x1.5”) 19 sc (x1.5 +1) 28 linked tc (~x1.5) (tutorial: http://www.crochetme.com/blogs/crochet_me/archive/2011/07/25/learn-how-to-create-linked-crochet-stitches.aspx). You can also (and I did) use linked stitches for everything but the clusters on the front. 42 linked tc (x1.5) 63 linked tc (x1.5) 79 linked tc (~x1.2, or increase in every 4th stitch) 108 linked tc (~x1.25) 130 linked tc (~x1.5) 152 linked dc (increase in every 6th stitch). Weave in center end now. This is certainly not the most elegant progression; I was winging it, and I couldn’t get linked stitches to work in a round with much less than 24 stitches.
To join, sc around. Insert a loop of 15 ch wherever you like, and make sure you catch whatever stray ends there are on the outside when you begin here. Then do another round of sc, working 20 around the loop, and fasten off.1. What was your inspiration?
A potholder pattern I found on Ravelry that was nice, but difficult to interpret the translation of, and a coaster pattern I found a few years ago (linked in instructions).
What are you most proud of?
Figuring out a workable increase pattern for the back!
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
