Three Sisters for Moda

What was your inspiration?

I love Charise's patterns and her blog. I was reading along and noticed she is doing this Vintage Block Quilt Along. I want to do several BOM's this year. I enjoyed the Craftsy BOM last year. I am using fabric from the Three Sisters line for Moda which I obtained several years ago. It may or may not still be available...but never fear, I have plenty in my stash! I have been hoarding this for quite the while. I originally bought it to make another quilt, but I have made that quilt so many times I'm bored with it. I think this will be pretty. The fabric has a romantic note to it and has that teal color I love!!!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I would say that this is a good BOM if you want to learn some advanced techniques, like sewing curves and Y seams. At the end of each of these blocks you should be proficient at both...LOL. Definitely do as she says and use a SCANT 1/4 inch. It will make a difference in the final trim up.

Hi Applekrisp - I have had my eye on Charise' BOM for a while. Love her ideas and fabric. Your fabric choices gave a whole new perception, of course. Looks wonderful. I just bought a used Brother (picking up today) at the sewing machine store. $900 new, $399 used. Looks like new. Quiet and powerful. The original owner upgraded. Has all the accessories, even a table extension AND the InstructionBook, too. Cannot wait. Has a few goodies like thread cut, needle up, knee lift........loved my other machines, but time for a new toy with fun tricks on them. Sew exciting.

Oh WOW!!! And just when I've committed (re-committed) to no more new projects until I finish the ones I already have :D - Will definitely bookmark this and save it for the future. Your blocks are gorgeous, as always!

For those that are interested, one of the things I did with the pattern pieces (as they are paper bits) I ran the whole thing through my laminator and then cut them out, I have nice stiff plastic coated templates to draw around now. Just tuck them in an envelope and inside a plastic binder sleeve along with the instructions for future use!

So pretty. I love your colors. I'm going to do this years BOM. I am mostly a 2 to 4 color person so am having a hard time coming up with the right combination.

You should take the Craftsy class on color, it's very instructive. I have all her books and she really has a different approach. Can't say I care for the videos, they kind of drag on, but if you pay attention she has great info to offer.

Thanks for the link, I think! Now I want to do this BOM also - might be a good time to scrounge through my 2 bins of scraps. Your fabrics are great & the blocks look wonderful.

I agree with patzinsuffolkuk. Both of these blocks are unusual. I love your fabric. Someone gave me a small package of fat quarters and fat eighths several years ago. Sadly, I've used it all up. This looks like an interesting BOM - think I'll check it out.

What an unusual block - curves mixed with straight bits - looks rather difficult. I'm going to have a look at the Vintage Block Quilt-Along, as it seems interesting. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with - this is really lovely fabric - well worth your having stashed it away for so long!

these blocks are from the Kansas City Star News Paper circa 1930's...they use to print patterns in the paper.

I saw these the other day on her blog and fell in love. Just seeing these two make me feel like the finished quilt will be beautiful. Can't wait to start it!

my really good machine is in the shop...I am having to stitch on my "only in emergencies" machine. It feels awkward, but I am desperate to sew! I hope they hurry and get it fixed. It wasn't holding the needle and I was trying to get a baby quilt quilted for Christmas...took me two days!!! I finally WAXED the needle into place, which would hold long enough for me to get a bit done before the head would melt it and I would have to turn it all off and re wax it. CRAZY! But it was for a friend, her first quilt and I didn't want to let her down. Turned out beautiful...onward we go!

It should have ONLY been the SCREW that was holding the needle in place, which needed replacing.

Well, you would think so Sandie, but apparently on the Bernina, it's the whole assembly that needs to be replaced. We'll see, when they call...at least with the wax, no permanent damage is done either way. I was totally at a loss for a quick fix.

Wax - hahahah, toooo funny. But you know if it was me I probably would have done the same or pulled out the duct tape :)

I like to make Ukrainian Eggs and they require a certain type of wax, It melts lovely but is very hard when cold, I used my stylus to wax the hip of the needle and then inserted it into the shaft. Cranked down the screw and let the wax set up. It really worked like a charm. I wonder if I should have given them instructions for how to remove the wax...lol. I'll call Monday. I did leave a note with it explaining what I had done. They'll fix it up and I will be back in sewing heaven once more. I love that machine! It certainly was not a top of the line Bernina, on the contrary, but it has been an amazing workhorse and I can highly endorse their products. I have two other Bernina's, a serger and an embroidery machine, both are loved dearly. Now I just need a LONG ARM...any suggestions?
