Variegated Cotton Silk Sea Urchin

Sea Urchin

Sea Urchin

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Brilliant Knit Beads with Betsy Hershberg »

Instructions

Betsy Hershberg's class is great and I am using up remnants of embroidery threads from my shamefully large stash. Just have a play, use small knitting needles, this is done on a size 0 needle but they are still a bit too large. For the next bead, I am painting the wooden bead in a similar colour to the yarn to blend it in.

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Other

Style: Eco-Friendly, Funky, Ethnic, Casual, Whimsical

Materials

Variegated silk/cotton blend, size 8 Miyuki seed beads, wooden bead

What was your inspiration?

I live by the sea and am a scuba diver, so sea critters and coral inspire a lot of my work.

What are you most proud of?

That I managed to turn a project that wasn't working around, this is only my third bead made as a result of Betsy's online class and I am really pleased that I figured out how to make the ribs by turning the swatch inside out.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

learn on the needle, graphing of bead placement is great and a good skill to have but in reality, your skills and technique grows through giving things a go and just seeing what happens.

I love your bead! FYI, Purse Paradise sells bead knitting supplies and the have very fine steel DPNs, from size 0 down to 8/0. The beaded bags they sell use #8 Perle Cotton and 11/0 seed beads and they recommend size 4/0 for that size. I want some finer needles so I am excited to find a source! http://www.purseparadise.com/

Couldn't agree more. This is flat out awesome! Bianca has taken the technique of bringing up beads between stitches on horizontal wrapper, tweaked the bead placement pattern AND turned it "inside out," showing the KNIT stitches on the outside of the wrapper. Brava!
