Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Plus-Size Pattern Fitting & Design »

Instructions

Like most, I am finding the neckline a little high for me, and not really flattering. After I get the fit down, I might convert to a deeper neck before adding the bias binding. I have cut a short sleeve, but not sure yet if I'll add it, or use this as a summery top without sleeves.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Plus-sized

Style: Classic

Materials

I used a heavier woven cotton, a little heavier than average muslin. It's a very subtle pale peach paisley pattern.

What was your inspiration?

I've seen this top on a number of blogs and it is quite flattering on many body types. I love that Barbara took it and showed the many ways it can be styled.

What are you most proud of?

While I still need to take some out of the side seams, and perhaps deepen the front darts a little, this is the best fitting bust I have sewn for myself in a long time. I've also just recently got back into sewing, watching Barbara's class made this very easy.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time with the fittings. Once you get this pattern to fit exactly, you can use it for many different style. You will have a well-fitting bodice that you can use to make alterations to other patterns. Don't be afraid to experiment, and have fun!

It look great. I would dye it and wear it for a nice cool summer top.Great fit.

Thanks! It's hard to see from the lighting, but this is actually a very pale peach paisley print. When I finish it, I will get some better pics. The bad thing about this fabric is that it wrinkles like crazy, but it will be nice to wear on the deck this summer.

You look great! And, I'm sure you're learning a lot from the muslin mock-up. Keep at it and please let us see your final project!!

Thanks! Yes, I've learned quite a bit and am keeping notes in the pattern envelope. When I do the second one, I will lower neckline and lengthen the peplum. I meant to lengthen it for this one and forgot.

Looks like you're making great progress! Remember to do your fitting with the seams on the outside, if your figure is symmetrical, so they don't cause distortion and you can reach them while you're pinning. Can't wait to see the finished top!

Thanks - I have made some adjustments and will do another fitting this weekend. I've decided that I will add the sleeves, just so I can get some fitting experience with them. Will also try lowering the neckline, and will post when finished.
