Did you use the t-shirt pattern from the class and just cut the front as two pieces on the bias rather than one on the fold? Wait, you did something else since there aren't separate sleeve pieces, right? Is the back also a chevron or are the stripes straight across the back?

I used out of print pattern Vogue 2262 top. I cut the front and back patterns in half and add s.a. And I cut the front and back in bias.
