Materials

Old wooden door art that was made from 2x6 pine boards. I would use cedar if I were making this from scratch, but hey, I was up-cycling and couldn't see throwing the used lumber away.

What was your inspiration?

We had some doors that were in an art show that had funky art colors on them, mainly color for some blank walls. So when they said that they were going to throw them away I immediately said that I would "dispose" of them for them. I didn't know at the time that they were going to be a garden potting bench, but I just knew that they could be used for something.
A few months into Spring, I needed something to pot my plants and store all of my garden tool and accessories but everything out there just wasn't "ME." So I drew up some sketches until I had all the storage that I needed and presented it to my husband (because he knew that if he didn't build it I would) and he built it perfectly with the wood that I had brought home from work!

What are you most proud of?

That we up-cycled something that would end up in a landfill and made something very usable and practical for our garden.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Draw out what you want to make and then draw it over again until you have all the storage planned out. Measure your wood and lay it out on the ground first after cutting it like a puzzle to make sure that you have all that pieces and hardware that you need. Make a list before you go to the hardware store to save time.
