Quilting: Underwater Fantasy

Underwater Fantasy

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stupendous Stitching: Adventures in Surface Design »

Instructions

I used "battilizer" for the stabilizer -- I enjoyed working with it and like the softer look than the results from fusible interfacing.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Mod, Whimsical

Materials

Threads (heavy cotton, rayon, metallic), yarn, perle cotton, cords, paint for the fish, beads

What was your inspiration?

I have always been aware that I wasn't getting the most out of my machine because I seldom used any of the decorative stitches. The Studpendous Stitching class provided the impetus for me to explore the features of my machine.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just let your imagination run wild -- there are no mistakes with this technique. Although it is somewhat tedious to stitch out a "Stitch Bible" -- I stitched out 560+ stitches and didn't even stitch them all out -- it is really worth the effort. I would suggest using different threads -- I used a different thread for each page.

Lovely. I;ve never seen material like that. Is it batik? The stitches really give it an underwater look.

Thanks. It is a batik -- I believe it's a hand-dyed piece I bought at a quilt show.

Wow, this is fantastic. It looks like you programmed a combination of a couple of stitches, something I've recently learned to do.

Thank you -- I did program a couple of the stitches -- something I don't usually take advantage of!

Beautiful! Great idea to also test different threads while stitching you "Stitch Bible". You can learn several things at the same time. Love those spirals and thanks for sharing.
