What materials did you use? Class materials, from the kit, plus fabrics from my polka dot stash. I used a 60-degree triangle ruler for some of the cuts.

What are you most proud of? Truly, I am MOST proud of the fact that I was able to get back sewing again... we had a house fire back in March, with a lot of smoke damage, and have had to vacate for a while... still sorting that all out, but am glad that I thought to pack out my sewing machine and BOM fabrics... Still not sure if I will be participating in the entire BOM, but I am glad to contribute a July block. I've missed this!

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Follow Laura Nownes' instructions... she is a calm and detailed teacher. Above all, be very attentive in selecting the proper fabrics. You must have an arrangement of light, medium, and dark value to get the 3-D effect. Press the seams open. Use a spritz of spray starch to help keep the bias cuts from stretching. If you want to try a hollow block, go for it! Just be prepared to have a LOT more seams to iron open! Also, you will have to be very diligent about getting everything lined up in the proper order. There is a lot of planning involved! It is a bit of a brain teaser!! :)

Diana this is incredible, love love love this transparent block. Will have to try it when I get back to this class. So sorry to hear of your house fire and very thankful you are ok. Thanks for the inspiration and I am excited to see your finished quilt.

Thank you, Desna! I'm not sure if I will make these BOM blocks into a quilt... I'm not finding time to sew much, but it is fun to try the new (to me) techniques when possible. I'm glad to see that you are posting projects... Love the Bucket Bags that you have created! :)

Where in the lessons are the instructions for making the hollow blocks? I'd love to try my hand at this.

Hi dinxdeb58, The hollow block was not included in the official lesson, it was a modification that some of us tried, and shared. I was sure I shared the link here, when I first posted this project in 2013, but now I don't see it. Craftsy has reformatted the project pages since then, and apparently the info was deleted. I remember it was a you tube video for the Hollow Block tutorial. When I have time I will try to search it out again, and if I succeed in tracking it down I will return to this page an post the link for you.
