What was your inspiration?
I created The Balkan Framed Square after doing Craftsy' February Block of the Month the Balkan Puzzle. From the beginning I wondered if I could design a way to seamlessly join block to block while maintaining the true BFS design. I achieved the design in a sampler (separate project) but didn't have enough fabric to make a lap quilt. That ended up as a Sampler with Squares Within Squares - not true to the BFS pattern. So I bought more fabric in colors that will work in my Guest Room and proceeded.
What are you most proud of?
The way the blocks seamlessly connect and carry the design true to the Balkan Framed Square - especially the corner to corner transitions. I was also pleased to find the Balkan Chevron pattern is a natural result of the true BFS quilt design.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Make at least one sample block, perhaps more, before proceeding with an entire quilt. Had I done this I would have discovered how the centers of the squares come out. I don't like them and will now do another version with a different complimentary fabric. This time I'll make blocks and join a few before proceeding. I want to make a twin size spread to use when company comes and I want to be happy with the final product. I'll finish this top with a wide border in the circles pattern later.
