Tree of life necklace

Instructions

Honestly, I looked at several photos of tree of life necklaces and just went for it. After several trials, I came upon a pill bottle that was the right size for the frame - about 2" diameter - and wrapped it with 18 gauge wire to make the frame. I used about 10" long segments of 22 or 24 gauge wire for the trees, wrapping them 2 or 3 times around the base of the frame before twisting them to ...

What was your inspiration?

While I hate the winter season, I love studying the structure of trees. All are different. One snowy day this past winter, I challenged myself to make one of the trees. I found a couple of pictures online and then made my first of many trees.

What are you most proud of?

I'm most proud of the fact that I'm not afraid to take risks when crafting. If something doesn't work, so what! It's all a learning experience!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Practice first using cheap wire! No two are ever alike, so don't stress if you can't make matching trees.

I have just finished one. I love the idea! Yours is very pretty! I have a stash of about a million chip beads in every stone and color. I want to make some of the tress that are attached to a large chunk of gemstone, drift wood, or stone. Try it, Same concept, just larger.

First, keep track of your costs - all of them. Then I usually multiply the cost by 3 or 4 to get my final price. Of course the price varies based on the stones used, the type of chain, any extras, etc...

I must be missing something because i can not see or understand any directions to make any of this stuff at all. If this is so it is a waste to even try. If I am wrong and missing sometning please help me to understand. The instructions dont seem to be instructions at all. please help!!!
shellyscorner on craftsy.com
Jan 14, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Hi "mommabear"! I am so sorry you're having trouble understanding all this! Believe me! I feel your pain! I find it a little frustrating as well when people don't put their instructions under the section marked "instructions". Unfortunately, I have never uploaded a project so I don't know what they see when they load a project. That may be part of the problem. Some people just want to share their work and have no desire to share their instructions. And that's okay. It would be better if they had a specific place for people to comment on their work, either above or below where the instructions are supposed to go. BUT!!! Until then....In this PARTICULAR CASE, Holly initially had several people ask about how to make the tree of life.... her instructions are located very near the VERY bottom of the page....I've copied them and am re-pasting them here so you and others can see them...HOLLY, I HOPE YOU DON"T MIND MY DOING THIS!....LET ME KNOW IF I'M OUT OF LINE...JUST TRYING TO BE HELPFUL!!...Honestly, I googled instructions for tree of life pendant and then started playing with the wires. The wire frame was made around an RX bottle - and is 18 gauge wire. I start with about 10" lengths of thinner gauge wire - check to see which gauge fits the stones you want to use! I've had gemstone chips that are okay with 24 gauge while others need 26 gauge. I start about 1/2 way up the wire and begin wrapping it 2 or 3 times around the base of the frame. Repeat the process about 8 or 9 times. (I like more branches!) When you get all of your trunk pieces on, you can give it a few twists. AFter that, you separate the 'trunk' into several different 'branches' and then you continue twisting and subdividing from there. When you are happy with the shape of your tree, you can begin adding your stone chips. When you come to the end (the frame), wrap the wire around the frame 3 or 4 times (tightly to secure it) before trimming it. Be sure to tuck the wire ends into your frame, otherwise they will poke you or snag your clothes. I started out making my own loop at the top of the frame, but I've modified my design and use jumprings at the top of the tree now. (I will post a different tree later to show what I mean.) I created the wire Celtic designs using a knock-off Wig-Jig and wrapped the crystals into them with thin gauge wires. The other beads were attached using eye pins. I also added chains and charms for extra whimsy........"mommabear" if after reading these "instructions" you still have trouble understanding what you need to do, REALLY don't be bashful!! Send Holly a private note and she would be more than happy to answer any questions you have and help get you started. ESPECIALLY if you're new to making jewelry! NEVER be afraid to ask questions! Most all of us in the jewelry community would be more than happy to help you if we had the answers....just ask! I hear your frustrations, I receive SO much joy from making jewelry and I would really hate to lose someone that could receive that same joy! Hope it helps.... you can reach me at - shellyscorner@yahoo.com - Good luck - Shelly

Very nicely done! And for all the rest of you guys that I keep reading that have said... and for those of you that are fixing to say.... "this is above my skill level...." STOP!!! That may be true in some cases, but honestly, it's not in this case. Making the tree of life is actually one of the "easiest", and I say easiest with GREAT trembling because I know how hard working with wire can be...because as forgiving as wire CAN be it can equally be unforgiving... but seriously, this is one piece that you really almost can't screw up. DON'T BE AFRAID TO TAKE A CHANCE! IF you make a "mistake", don't think of it as a mistake, think of it as a success, because it may not have turned out the way you wanted it to, but it's still a success because now you have one more thing to put down as KNOWING NOT to do. And everybody knows that knowledge is a wonderful thing! :-) I know it's a little more painful to learn it the hard way, but at least you still learned something. Since none of us is going to be perfect and most folks aren't expecting you to be perfect,(if anyone is expecting you to be perfect...tell 'em to take a hike, unless of course its your child, cause kids always think the grownups are perfect :-), STOP EXPECTING YOURSELF TO BE PERFECT! Most of us paralyze ourselves because we put so many unrealistic expectations on ourselves that we can't live up to for various reasons....instead of expecting perfection when you work on this project, realize that this is the "Tree of Life" pendant. Life isn't perfect...while working on the piece, EXPECT to have FUN....EXPECT to be FULFILLED....EXPECT TO MAKE MISTAKES...it really is ok to make a mistake....BUT MORE THAN ANYTHING....WHILE LOWERINGTHE BAR IN OTHER AREAS OF WHAT YOU EXPECT OF YOURSELF,...RAISE THE BAR OF YOUR EXPECTATION OF YOURSELF IN AT LEAST ONE AREA...EXPECT TO TRY!!!! OK. I'm done now....Sorry, I didn't mean to preach a sermon there, not even sure where all that came from, but I see so many people that are more talented than they are willing to give themselves credit for...and that makes me sad. I spent my ENTIRE LIFE not just thinking that I didn't have a creative gene in my body, but I BELIEVED IT! Turns out that I do. I am creative. I'm actually quite talented in jewelry making. I started making jewelry three years ago at my daughters suggestion. Of course, that wasn't until after I laughed my butt off at her for MAKING the suggestion, but I had an epiphany, to long to go into here, but between books and the internet, I am totally self taught and I can sell it faster than I can make it! The bottom line...Don't be afraid...Believe in yourself. What ever you do, do it for yourself FIRST...THEN do it for others...It will mean more to you and for whomever you do it for. It's all about the heart behind the action. Believe in you...

I just read all the way down the list of comments and found your instructions. I do think it would be less confusing to have them in a separate place though. I love your work and I am grateful that you are willing to share your ideas. Thanks!

The instructions are at the bottom because this was the first piece I added. I really don't have directions, though.... I just saw them and thought I'd give it a shot.

I'm confused. Are there no instructions for this project? I am fairly new at making jewelry and need direction. I would love to learn how to make this beautiful piece.

You are SO right! Even if the stones aren't real leaf colors, too! Just finished an order for a bridal party using amethyst. It's very pretty!

It may not be... try it! I didn't think I could do it because I can't wrap gemstones in a way that I think looks "right", but I tried these and, well, they aren't half bad! :)

Honestly, I googled instructions for tree of life pendant and then started playing with the wires. I also added chains and charms for extra whimsy.

What gauge would you use for the twisting, I'm guessing about 20 dead soft?

I use 18 gauge on the frame - this is done with Parawire which matches Vintaj brass findings. For the trees, the gauge of wire depends on the stone used for the leaves, but it is generally 24 or 26 gauge.

Honestly, I googled instructions and played with it a lot in order to come up with the way I like it. Many start at the top, others start at the bottom. It becomes personal preference and what works best for your hands. I also looked at a LOT of images online to see what was out there. Then, start looking at the trees around you for inspiration! I never use the same process twice, though, so it's hard to give directions for something I'm still trying to perfect. I use 18 gauge wire for the outer frame and 20-24 gauge wire for the tree. The finer the gauge, the more branches you will have. Experiment with CHEAP wire - I cut my wire into 10" lengths for the branches and I wrap my 18 gauge wire around RX bottles or other 'small' bottles to make the frame. Even if you hammer it, the fram will distort when you are building your trees! Just go with it!
