Mike's class cake recipe and buttercream recipe. 12" cake board and Center dowel support.
What was your inspiration?
My son really wanted a Lego Ninjago cake for his 6th birthday. As we were discussing what it would look like, the idea of doing the tornado or creation came up. I am fairly new to cake decorating so this was my first time trying to properly structure a cake and carve it. I wasn't really sure what my game plan was going to be. Mike's class was a FANTASTIC source of support and inspiration! the skills he teaches in the class are completely transferable to other projects and I am so glad I was able to use some of his concepts to help me get through this experience!
What are you most proud of?
The cake didn't fall over, but it was close. I tried to use a wooden dowel pushed through a cake board and secured with hot glue. I ran into problems with the cake leaning too much, but once it was coated in Mike's buttercream and that set, the problem resolved itself.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Pay really close attention to the structure of the cake before you begin and do not dismiss the idea of using templates to help bring your vision to life.
