Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Design It, Quilt It: Free-Form Techniques »

Instructions

A quick and easy basic quilt pattern using strip set cuts of 3 fabrics to make the blocks. I wanted to use this small quilt to practice doing ESS (Every Stinking Seam!) from Cindy Needham's wonderful Craftsy class. Plus I tried my hand at Free-Form quilting using my domestic sewing machine.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Whimsical, Cute, Casual, Traditional

Materials

This was a simple 3 yd quilt kit using all cotton prints.

What was your inspiration?

Cindy Needham's class really inspired me to try out the ESS (it wasn't so bad!) and I wanted to practice my FMQ by doing free-form shapes without using any templates or markings. It was a fun project!

What are you most proud of?

I'm glad I stuck with doing the ESS and all the quilting! It proved to me that the quilt will not get too "stiff" with all that thread. After washing the quilt it got lots of nice puffiness, feels soft but sturdy! I have been quilting for just over 2 years and recently getting into FMQ on my domestic machine, so this has been a great project to increase my comfort level with free-form quilting!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just have fun with it! You may find you like the freedom of not following a particular quilting template, but just pick a few random patterns in your head and go with it! It has a Folksy quality that also is very forgiving because each block/quilt pattern can be unique and certainly does not have to be perfect!

This is so pretty, I can't believe you have only been quilting for 2 years. I am just a beginner myself.

An ESS convert! wooo hoooo! I could instantly tell that you ditched as your quilt hangs beautifully and your blocks pop. You have beautifully quilted it to death...great job! It looks so snuggy...makes me want to wrap right up in it :)

All that quilting makes a simple block design look quite complex. Wonderful little quilt!
