Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Pets

Style: Casual

Materials

100% cotton fabric, washable soft fur fabric, batting

What was your inspiration?

I wanted something to cover the portion of the couch that our dog sleeps on.

What are you most proud of?

Toby loves his quilt.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Anyone can design a project, especially if you keep it simple. I cut small squares of dog fabrics and sewed them together with a rectangle in the middle (machine-embroidered with the dog's name). I also added a small border. I machine quilted the top to the batting with a muslin back, then layered it right sides together with the fur fabric, leaving an opening for turning it right side out. Then I stitched the opening closed and sewed around the edge and the border.

Love to throw the top down to see how it looks and I know I have done good when the dogs come to lay on it

My cats are usually the first to come lay on a quilt top, whether I'm arranging blocks, measuring for borders, or admiring the finished top. Toby the dog prefers finished quilts or pillows (or his trusty dog bed). One of the cats LOVES to get under a quilt with me when I lay down for a nap...I don't know how he does it, but he can HEAR me unfold a quilt from wherever he is in the house and he comes running :)

I made a quilt for our miniature schnauzer too. I use it to cover her up on cold winter nights. She sleeps on my bed, so it's easy to reach over and cover her up. She absolutely LOVES it and will actually pull it up a little with her teeth and cover her head! LOL I just used leftover blocks from another quilt.

Great little quilt, and what a handsome little dog Toby is! I think I'll make up one or two as I have 4 Shih Tzu that lay on our furniture.

OH MY GOSH is this ever an adorible dog quilt. And I do have a lot of the fabrics that you used in this quilt. What a great idea, simple but pretty. What size did you cut the blocks? And just what is that "fur fabric" that you have on the back? Even though Max is a black and mostly white Shih Tzu, I don't want a light colored top for him on his quilt and this is just perfect. Thanxs for the great idea for a "mat" for Max. Great Job you did. Bev B

Thanks! I used 4.5" squares (4" finished). The fabric on the back I got at Joann's or Hancock's, I don't remember which, in their fur section. I don't remember what it was called, I just know I made sure it is washable. Have fun! I know Max will enjoy his new quilt!
