Time to Go Home

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Art Quilting: Pictorial Techniques »

Instructions

No special instructions. I used techniques from Wendy Butler Burns, and Annette Kennedy's courses

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

cotton cloth, deco bond, clear thread, colored thread, fabric paint

What was your inspiration?

My 25 year old grandson, was walking his 100 year old great grandmother to her ride after a cookout this fall. He is always kind to her and thoughtful, and watches over her, I took a picture of him escorting her, and decided to make a pictorial quilt for him for his birthday in May.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that I can record for history, some of my favorite photographs in a quilt form.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Use a picture that isn't too complicated and mostly with faces not in full view.

I too have a picture of my son walking with his grandmother from the mailbox on her last visit to see us - I had always thought of quilting it for him but after seeing yours - you've inspired me to perhaps get at it. This is a treasured keepsake for your son and I am sure he was thrilled with it. Beautiful job!

Hi Jacinta, I am finding out, to my surprise, that this quilt has touched a lot of people, and has revived memories of elderly people in their lives. That is great - thanks for your comment.

Touches the heart. When my 84 year old nieghbor arrived over in his shirt and underware for a chat, the memiory of this imagery helped to quell my impatience. Good thing...he was afraid that I'd forgotten his birthday, I had.

Beautifully done; did you use fabric paint for the tiny lines on her sweater? Your grandson will treasure this piece for many, many years.

Thank you Teresa - yes, I did use fabric paint for the lines on the sweater and also for many other parts of the quilt -hair, legs, shadows Etc.

Really lovely. You capture a lot in the quilt, and the fabric choices and quilting really add to the piece (especially like the stitching in the sky section).

Thanks Barb - I am happy you liked the sky quilting as I was not sure it was the right thing to do That reassured me that it looks ok

That is what I hoped to accomplish - a record for my Grandson to keep, of how he cared for his great grandmother.
