Instructions

One cannot be a beginner. These are hard to make. I have over 40 years in and she was not easy for me. Buy dense weaver's cotton for the body. Buy good cotton for the clothes. All materials need to be top notch or it will look cheap. My fabric was over $11.00 a yard and I used cotton lace and the best I could find for all phases. The fabric for the body is available on ebay. When you buy a book, ...

Materials

Tilda doll making fabric, fabric for body and contrasting for clothes, face kit, lace, hair yarn, needles, sewing machine, pattern book by Tone Finannger. Not copyrighted so you can sell you items....so cool! Oh I thought I had better say that the skirt is made from Kaffe Fasset collection. I don't use Tilda fabrics. Too costly for me so I buy fabrics on ebay and use my own collection but those who do not have their own just as well buy Tilda's. Tone's collection is very lovely! Her body is made of a fine grade of tan wool from Ireland. I would not recommend using wool. I bought it before I knew there was Tilda doll making fabric. So buy that if you can.

What was your inspiration?

Tone Finannger's book Pretty Home Collection. I could not wait to make one. I bought the fabric plus had some left over from my quilting days and set to work. She took about three days. They are not easy to make. Lots of measuring, tracing patterns, etc. I had to buy lots of trim and polka-dots. They are very big in this line. Not easy to find either.

What are you most proud of?

I am able to sew well and make what I like without lessons.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time. Don't rush it. No hurry.......just do what the book says and don't try to reinvent the wheel. Tone has it down pat and so just use her directions and you will have your own Tilda dolls in no time whether it is animals or angels, home decor items and pillows, Lots of embroidery opportunities for those who like that. I don't but without an e-machine, I am force to do it by hand if I want to embellish with floss. It just looks better done by hand anyway and the designs in the book are easy and fast. Tone doesn't make things hard to the sewer, just fun. Try it!
