Thrummed Mittens

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Mittens and Gloves Galore »

Instructions

If you use a yarn other than that specified in the project you will need to adjust your gauge. If you don't know how Marly can help you with it. Knit a swatch (!!) if you don't know what gauge your yarn and needles will produce because in these projects gauge is important, very important.

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Accessory

For: Children

Style: Classic, Casual

Materials

Yarn from eBay with Japanese label, it is some sort of washable wool, fingering weight, held double, 16" circular needles size US 4

What was your inspiration?

Grand children! And, in case everybody is wondering...Yes I did not thrum the thumb. My 9 yr old grandson said "Don't put anymore of that fat stuff in there, 'cause I need my thumbs for texting". I aim to please (LOL).

What are you most proud of?

The other project for this class, my first full fingered gloves. I just did these thrummed mittens because I had not done thrumming before, and they were quite fun.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Beginners should not shy away from this class. Marly gives very good instructions and tips along the way and you'll do fine. More advanced knitters will enjoy this class as well as there are some nice little tips and useful information. Start at the beginning and watch all the videos, you also will learn something, I did!

Does this pattern have bobbles? Is it in the mittens and gloves class?

It's not bobbles, it's "thrums" which are simply pieces of fabric put into the knitting. Yes, it is in the mittens and gloves class. There is a mitten pattern that is several different ways and this is just one if the variations, it was quite fun. It's a very good class.

Got it at my LYS, but I was also looking around and KnitPicks and WEBS both have several different types you can get. I also discovered that at some online places if you put in the search word "spinning supplies" this thrumming material will come up, other good search words: roving, and top.

Beautiful! I made one glove,so far, using sock yarn and it turned out great! I didn't double the yarn , just went for it! I love the cozy feel the thrum gives!

As long as you figure out the gauge I'd think you can use any yarn you want. I have another sock yarn I'm going to try too.

Grandson really like the inside softness, he rubbed in on his face for ten minutes!
