Instructions

This is an advanced project. The pattern is a little difficult to follow - and you need a really sturdy machine to get through all the layers of fabric and interfacing. But...it is awesome when it's done.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Accessory

For: Women

Style: Classic, Traditional

Materials

Home Dec fabric, a zipper, purse feet

What was your inspiration?

My friend wanted a diaper bag - I saw this pattern (it is for a diaper bag) and got it. I never made her a diaper bag, but I did make a bag for me. I then offered it as a class. It was not an easy project, but the ladies got through it and have some awesome bags.

What are you most proud of?

Interpreting the pattern and finding a way to explain things to the women in my class.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time and buy plenty of 18/110 needles. And attempt this only if you have a good, strong machine. I used fusible horsehair interfacing and cut it slightly smaller than the fabric - it reduced bulk in the fabric.

I too bought this pattern to make a diaper bag, and you are correct, it is not an easy project and i consider myself an advanced sewer! I think I ripped out and resewed the zipper section 2 or 3 times and I'm still not convinced I did it correctly!! But, the bag did turn out great and I gave it as a gift.

Yes, the directions for the zipper...yikes. I ended up recreating this for my ladies in class. I put it in the wrong way the first time (but it worked), then fixed it the second time. I also measured all the pattern pieces and used a rotary cutter instead. My next one may be from this free pattern at Warehouse Fabrics - http://www.warehousefabricsinc.com/blog/diaper-bag-with-a-divider/
