A UFO that had traveled around the world and then hid in a closet for years and years.
What was your inspiration?
My quilting buddy from the end of our summer island showed me this family heirloom, an unfinished quilt that had been handed down in the family and referred by all as the "Ugly Quilt." It was hand pieced with the tiniest of stitches and needed to be finished. I volunteered to tackle the job.
What are you most proud of?
The family was so thrilled to have their quilt back, finished and looking entirely different than they'd ever envisioned. It was started in the 1930's and was made from old clothes as many quilts were back in those days. The original owner packed it in her suitcase as she left for a world tour, intending to work on it along the way, but never got around to it.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
If you are working on something old and have to add new fabric be sure to shop for something that represents patterns from that era. My friend and I spent an afternoon shopping for just the right fabric that would complement the colors and patterns that were used in the beginning. It was a fun project and very rewarding.
