Quilting: The rose

The rose

Instructions

I used a stencil from Stensource.com for the lines of the rose.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Romantic

Materials

muslin, fabric paints, a light light polyester batting over cotton batting

What was your inspiration?

I painted the rose just so I could do the feathers so that they look like they are behind the rose. It is about 18" in diameter and will be cut into circular quilt when bound. I was demonstrating painting at a quilt exhibit by my group today. I couldn't wait to get home to quilt it.

What are you most proud of?

I am learning. My quilting has changed since I took Cindy's class. For instance, I chose a tan thread instead of the natural I would have used. I love the shadow effect. I'm not using a thread that much darker than I use to but it is a few shades darker. I am getting better at the feathers going under but I still get nervous doing it. But not as nervous as I use to get. I just need to do it and do it and do it and that case of nerves will be a thing of the past.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Smile while you practice and make your practice pieces into something.

You are definitely multi-talented. I don't know which is more impressive...your painted rose or your beautiful quilting.

I am so in awe of your quilting! Feathers aren't the easiest things to do, but to do them in a circle! Well! Your rose is lovely too. What a lovely centrepiece this is going to make for your quilt. I look forward to seeing the finished quilt in due course.

Oh Deb I can see why you couldn't wait to quilt your rose... extra special! You've certainly captured the sunshine and shadow in this. Love the circle of pearls on the stem of the leaves and the echoing on the outside... just perfect for this! I especially love the painted rose... you've framed it beautifully with your quilting, well done!

Gorgeous! the painting is wonderful. I like how you painted the tips and edges, it's not too heavy. A great piece to add the feather quilting to, it really adds pizazz.
