I am wondering if the background is all done in 3.5 inch squares like the heart square is. or is the background just done log cabin style with 4 pieces around the heart square???

Awesome question! The background of my quilt was done in large pieces of sashing, based on what I had on hand. You certainly could do it log cabin style, that would be a good method. I believe I began by adding the pieces on the right and left sides of the heart first, then the bottom, then the top, in four large pieces. Hope this helps!
