1/5/13 update: here is what I did. This isn't a "real" and tested pattern, just info on what I did. I hope this helps those who really wanted a pattern of some sort. I'm already assuming y'all know basic crochet stitches. (If not, there are tons of vids on YouTube.)
Row 1: dc in fourth ch from hook and in every ch across. You'll have a total of 27 stitches, including the ch 3 "post." Now chain 4 and turn your work.
Row 2: Treble crochet in your first two stitches (NOT starting at the bottom of the chain 4 but the ones NEXT to it). That chain 4 is going to count as your first tc post. *Ch3, skip 3 sts, tc in each of the next 3 sts* Repeat from * until the end of this row. Your LAST tc will be in the TOP of the chain 4 from the last row. Now chain 3 and turn your work.
Row 3: Dc in the NEXT stitch and in EVERY stitch across the whole row, including into each chain stitch from the previous rows "ch3s". The last dc will be into the top of the chain from the previous row. COUNT your dc posts. You should still have 27, including the chain 3 "post" at the beginning of the row.
Then just repeat rows 2 and 3 until the scarf is the length you want it. Count every row for the 27 stitches so you don't skip one (sometimes those chains in the ch3 are hard to see and dc into) and have to frog back a row. Trust me. 27. keep counting.
To end, you'll want to end on a row of dc because then it is matchy-matchy with the scarf's beginning end, and it is more sturdy/defined/pretty than ending on a treble crochet row.
I hope this is easy to understand. It truly is easy to do!1/5/13 update: here is what I did. This isn't a "real" and tested pattern, just info on what I did. Bernat "Mosaic" yarn...2 skeins. Probably a "G" hook.
What was your inspiration?
A friend had a picture of a scarf from Pinterest, but it didn't link to any real directions. So I studied it, and saw it was just a matter of single and treble crochets, and drew up a "pattern" on a notepad. I had some lovely blue Mosaic yarn I hadn't known what to do with, so I used it, and it came out GORGEOUS. Look at those colors!! I have yet to block it, but perhaps tonight.
What are you most proud of?
Figuring out the pattern, even though it was pretty simple. Since then, I have learned that this series of stitches is called a "window pane" by some. So I put that in the title.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
This is easier than it looks. I'm going to try to write out the simple pattern and post that, too. Easy-peasy.
Yes! When I was looking up "window pane scarf" last night (to try to help folks out since I worked from a picture and not a pattern), I saw that one! She uses tc, sc, sl st, and hdc and more repeats. I wish I had seen this before trying to decipher the picture I saw on Pinterest (it was not the Ravelry scarf). I'm still going to try to add my figured-out "pattern" on this page. But for anyone who wants to try a real pattern (since I'm no pattern-writer), this is an excellent post! Thank you!!
