The Kimbra Dress

My inspriation and my creation

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Retro / Vintage, Romantic, Cute, Whimsical, Funky

Materials

Black Satin underlined with silk organza.

What was your inspiration?

I saw the music video for Settle Down by Kimbra and instantly fell in love with her dress. It was a classic baby-doll dress with an edgy, daring sheer panel in the front. It was exactly my style! Knowing that I would have little or no occasion to wear this dress myself, I decided to make it for my friend to wear to her bachelorette party. I used Susan Khalje's Couture Dress class to make the dress. I fit her in a muslin before making the final product, which is underlined and lined. I incorporated a hand-picked side zipper. This was such a fun dress to create and my friend felt so special to have a custom-made dress for her bachelorette party!

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the fact that I was able to create this dress without a set pattern for it. I blended two different dress patterns and altered the front bodice to add the center sheer panel. I am also proud of the couture techniques that went into this dress. It came out perfectly and fits my friend like a dream...or a custom garment :)

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Always take the time to make a muslin before starting a project. I actually had to make two muslins - the first one was an entire size too big! It would have been quite the challenge to try to resize the dress if I hadn't made a muslin beforehand. It also took some time for me to figure out the center panel and I would have ruined the fashion fabric with all the ripping out and re-evaluating that had to be done.

Wow, thank you so much. I didn't do any drawings since I was imitating a dress I saw in a music video. This was my first dress to incorporate couture techniques, so it is by far my best. I have another couture dress half-way done, but I've gotten pulled off onto other projects and haven't finished either one yet! I will be sure to post other projects as I finish them. The craftsy community is so kind and helpful. These wonderful comments certainly help me feel more confident in my sewing and I so enjoy seeing everyone else's creations.

This is beautiful. I look forward to the day when I have the courage to fly without a net (no pattern to fall back on). It looks fabulous on your friend . . . the right amount of sexy and still classy.

You did an outstanding job on this dress, considering you did not have a pattern. Truly an excellent job,, and it fits your friend very well. Kudos to you!!

I used this Cynthia Rowley pattern (2215) for the skirt and the bodice. I had to alter the bodice to create the sheer panel in front, but this was a good starting point and guide. http://www.simplicity.com/p-5908-misses-miss-petite-dresses-cynthia-rowley-collection.aspx#t-0. The front ruffle came from this McCall's pattern (M6503) which I had in my stash: http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6503-products-16285.php?page_id=108

What an amazing dress! Well done! How did you do the front ruffle and the sheer bodice? Very fun!

Thank you! I used part of a dress pattern for the ruffle, and the sheer bodice was a lot of trial and error. It took a few tries to find fabric that would be strong enough for that placement but still be nice and sheer. I'll try to find the patterns that I merged and post them as a reference.

Not only making muslins, but using the stitching line on the muslin. I made muslins before with the standard 5/8" seam allowance. I would make alternations, but I was guessing and the next muslin never fit and I didn't know why. With the stitching lines on the muslin there is no guessing, I feel confident in the alterations I've made and I don't need to make 26 muslins for one dress. I love the dress you made!

Ditto! I would have so many more clothes in my closet if I had just been making muslins from the beginning.

Cute! Nice job. I agree about the necessity of making a muslin.
