What was your inspiration?

My son whanted a starwars theme birthday.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Put a cake cardboard sheet in the middle of the two halfs of cake. After a few hours out of the fridge it started to sink down, even with a dowel.

Very cool! To keep it from sinking it has to be made from a more dense sturdy cake, like pound cake. I'd put a stiff butter cream filling in between the halves so there's filling when you cut it; slice in half down the mid vertically, lay each half down, then cut up. :-)
