Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Instructions

I watched almost all of the videos before I began and thought that was very helpful. Then, I re-watched videos at each step. Susan's instructions are wonderful and the platform has been very helpful (both Susan's responses and reading the other questions from participants).

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Classic

Materials

Navy cotton pique for the dress, silk organza underlining and 'majestic purple' silk crepe de chine for the lining.

What was your inspiration?

My grandmother is an excellent seamstress and always made my holiday clothes growing up. I've wanted to learn how to sew since then but never really took the time. I figured with this was a great way to get a solid foundation with some serious skills.

What are you most proud of?

I'll be most proud of finishing the project and actually wearing the dress!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Take your time, don't be afraid to repeat steps. Take advantage of the platform - I found Susan and others taking the class to be extremely responsive and helpful. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Love the fabric choices in terms of colors and sheen. Totally agree with everyone saying how proud you should be of yourself - it really turned out great.

What a pretty dress. I love the color and the full skirt. You've inspired me to consider making the same choice. This is an amazing accomplishment for a first dress and you should be very proud of yourself. Well done! Looking forward to your next dress.

Thank you! I'm really happy with my choices for this dress. I have purchased a vintage Spadea pattern for my next dress and I'm going to use the same directions and techniques - can't wait!

Yes, pretty nice for your first dress! The fabric looks nice, I think: In that rich blue you've given the cotton a fresh, clean elegance. Points for style! :) I'm curious, between the picture called "Hand basted front" and the one called "Hem finished, waiting for lining" the skirt seems to have become fuller. (Unless, of course, I'm finally losing it. Chuckles) Do you know why it might look this way, please?

You are not losing it! It is fuller because I used horsehair in the hem as Susan suggests in the hem video. I then covered the horsehair amd hem with hem lace. It gives it great shape and weight. I have the skirt lining pinned in, waiting for hand stitching. So close!.

I noticed that we both made the same adjustment to the bodice in the front and back. I like it!

Me too! After hand basting I briefly questioned taking out the princess seams in the midriff (maybe they would have made my short waist look longer!) but I decided I like it the way it is. I'm hoping for that "your waist is so small" look! :)

Underlining in and dress hand basted. Overall, I am happy with it! I will make a few adjustments to add some ease to the midriff and bodice, as well as adjust the shoulder seam a little. Now I need to make the corrections on the dress and the muslin . . .

The fit looks really good! Having spent most of the summer working on my project for the class, my only note would be that by the time you've spent all the hours constructing the dress, and putting the silk organza and crepe de chine in there, you may end up wishing you had used something a little more luxurious than the cotton pique for the fashion fabric. Maybe use a silk, linen or light wool crepe?

Thanks tvjulie! I know, I've gone back and forth about the fashion fabric and the lining. . .this is my first real garment construction project, so I was trying to be conservative with the materials, but I think I may reassess.

You make a good point, TVJulie. But on the other hand I'd rather do it in cotton, too. It has a nice, honest elegance, and there is no stress about messing it up. More expensive fabric would paralyse me with fear! (laughs)
