Usually this type of pattern is done by applying a glob of icing with a spatula and sort of smushing it onto the side of the cake. I've never seen it done with a tip at all.

Thanks everyone. I had a lot of fun making this cake. I used Wilton tip # 12 . Just the tip, no spatula. Once you squeeze, stop squezing move the tip to the size you want .Hope this help. Good luck!
