Materials

I used 22 up-cycled t-shirts. The shirts were no longer wearable but perfect for turning into yarn and crocheting a rag rug.

What was your inspiration?

I wanted to find a use for my families old t-shirts. I heard about this project and decided to give it a try. The t-shirts are perfect - they make a very sturdy and completely washable rug. Our pug, Rosie, loves to nap on them no matter where we use them - the kitchen, the entry way, and in front of the back door!

What are you most proud of?

The up-cycling of something we have so many of - I hate to throw anything away. I have always been a "saver" and love finding new uses for old or worn out things.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Collect as many t-shirts as you can, cut them and roll them as you get them. It always takes more than you think so save as many as you can get your hands on. This rug took 22 t-shirts of varying sizes.

One thing I forgot to mention is that you must increase as the circle grows. Because I am self taught I do not have a quick and easy solution for this. I usually ad a chain between hdc to increase. It's the placement that is hard to explain. As I build the rug I add them in where I feel they should go. Ambiguous as it is that is how I increase for this project.

What size hook did you use?

I used a size "P" hook. Recently I found an "S" hook which is HUGE. The t-shirt yarn was cut into 1" strips. It's important to "stretch" the yarn after it is cut. Before I rolled it I stretch it length by length. I am not sure how to clearly explain that. After you cut the t-shirt take a length and pull it taught gently - do this for the whole t-shirt. It makes the "yarn" easier to work with.

How do you prepare the t-shirts, from cutting the material and making it into yarn? ,
