I just started making t-shirt quilts for my sister children from their Dad's t-shirts. He passed away recently and the first few shirts I cut into were hard because I would tear-up. Had to put the project aside for a couple of weeks. Started again and hope to have the four quilts done by Christmas. It's been an emotional roller-coaster. My niece wanted to help make the quilts for her brothers but she cried more than I did. Called a couple of my quilting buddies to lend a hand.

I have a bag of my son's t-shirts that I want to make a quilt for my grandson but just haven't had the courage to take the roller cutter to them

I did exactly what Sara has said--I adhered interfacing to each t-shirt square

How do you keep the shirts from stretching to much

Some people use another layer of a thin cotton (like a lining) behind the t-shirt square. Others use a light weight fusible interfacing.
