Sweet Pea Cake

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Women

Style: Outdoorsy, Traditional, Whimsical, Romantic

Materials

SK Flower Paste, Wires and petal dusts

What was your inspiration?

Was on a course to make sweet peas (course in the UK). Sweet Peas are now my favourite flower. Quite simple to make, but ever so pretty!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Get yourself the cutters and have a go! Don't be afraid of rolling that flower paste very thin!

Are the stems edible or are they the wires that you can buy?

Ok! Those sweet peas are FLAWLESS! Where did you learn how to make them? I mean was it a book? If so I need the name please! I LOVE!

I learnt them on a course in the UK. However, I have to say that they are surprising easy to make.

1. Buy Sweet Pea cutters. I prefer metal cutter and have Tinkertech. I am a HUGE fan of Scott Clark Woolley, so would recommend those in the US (I spend extra to have them shipped to the UK they're that good!).

2. Make the Keel. Roll out a small ball of flower paste. Push a hooked wire through until the ball is secured at the top.

3. Elongate and flatten the ball so that it looks like a pasty (Google that if you don't have pasties in the US).

4. Using the back of your craft knife/Exacto knife make a line down the cirved side of the keel. DO this in a rocking motion rather than dragging. Dust the sides with a very small amount of yellow petal dust. Dust the Curved edge with cyclamen, or similar colour.

5. Roll out your petal paste to a thickness whereby if you laid the paste over a book you'd be able to see the letters through it.

6. Cut out one each of the petals. Dust from the edges inwards with cyclamen. Dust a little yellow at the base.

7. Using a ceramic veining tool, or cocktail stick, frill the edges of the petals. soften with ball tool.

8. Using small amount of edible glue attach inner petal at back of keel and then outer petal at back of inner petal.

9. Leaves are made free hand (no cutters or template). Tendrils are made of florist tape cut into 1/4 strips and rolled between your fingers to make very fine. Wrap around a pen or cocktail stick to make curly.

Gorgeous! So elegant in its simplicity. I love the undecorated cake even though it is a dummy. Something simple and lacy might be pretty.

Forgot to add, it's just on a dummy cake until I decide how to decorate the cake... maybe some cocoa painting, or brush embroidery??
