Crocheting: Sweet Pea Afghan
530 kudoz

Sweet Pea Afghan

Lilah's blanket

Granny squares!
Lilah's blanket
love this pattern :)

Pattern Info

Pattern info for this project can be found here:
Sweet Pea Afghan »

Instructions

I created a different edge for the afghan. I just felt that the granny square motif needed a twist to it. First, I edged it with about 3 rows of single crochet, then intermittent double crochets, and finally, I ended with another row of single crochets. All 3 steps using each color from the afghan one by one.

Difficulty:

Category: Crocheting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Traditional, Cute

Materials

Lion Brand Vanna's Choice Baby

What was your inspiration?

Lion Brand's pattern of course!!

What are you most proud of?

The prettiness! And how much my granddaughter, Lilah loves it. She won't be "read to" without it!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Crochet loose ends in your work as you go. It's a tedious chore to leave until the end!

It looks like you used a different method of joining the squares than sewing them together like the pattern directions. Did you single crochet them together with white, wrong sides together? I like the added dimension that the raised ridge adds to the pattern. With crochet joining, you can crochet over the loose ends and avoid some weaving in, too. There's a join-as-you-go method for granny squares on the Internet - if my recollection is correct, it uses a zig-zag pattern to assemble the squares. Less ends to weave in, again. (Can you tell I don't enjoy weaving in ends?)

Yes! That's exactly what I did. I played around with a couple of different methods and ended up with this choice because of the raised edge. I'm glad that you like it too :)

I wish I'd watched my grandmother more closely when she tried to teach me how to crochet. I love granny squares. Grew up in Hillsboro, by the way.

What!? Really! Hillsboro? That's too funny...I also love granny squares. They are simple yet intricate looking. I love mixing up the colors and creating new looks with edging.

I am a beginner in the very strictest sense. I have never crocheted a single stitch. :) So I wll be looking into tutorials and books on the subject. I have a daughter that is doing this too, and I thought perhaps this might also be something that we could enjoy together. Given the difficulty level of the project, I thought it would be a good place to start.

Your edge trim is different than the pattern and it really adds so much to the overall effect. Looks like it's a simple stitch, but you did it so very well!

oh boy, i dunno...i stopped and started over too long of a time. I used 3-4 skeins of each...the white yarn not as much. I recommend starting with 4 of each in same dye lot. The pattern is on lionbrand.com under Sweet Pea afghan.
