Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Children

Style: Mod

Materials

Cotton prints, solid & batik in quilt-top; flannel on back

What was your inspiration?

Contemporary design for teenager - lovely pink fabric with tiny brown dots - and - gorgeous brown & hot pink batiks...

What are you most proud of?

Managing to quilt entire project on my 40+ year old Kenmore sewing machine! It was a huge challenge to maneuver the bulk every which way for the outline quilting. I even used pink thread for quilting on the light fabrics and brown thread on the brown blocks.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be patient and methodical. Read & re-read instructions. Laying out blocks on a design wall (old flannel sheet attached to a blank wall with push-pins!) before sewing together. Double-check seam allowances often. It makes a difference to the outcome. Keep a seam ripper handy...

I also made this pattern....as a crib quilt. You did a fabulous job with your fabric choices. Maybe I will make it again when my newborn granddaughter is 16!

I used the pattern "Modern Mirrors" from the wonderful book, Modern Basics: Easy Quilts to Fit Your Budget, Space, and Style by Amy Ellis ((That Patchwork Place - Paperback - Feb 7, 2011). The original pattern uses 9 rows of 6 blocks which each finish at 10" x 14" for a finished quilt of 82.5" x 90.5". However, I made it as a Lap Quilt, approximately 56" x 70". I made the same blocks using the same assembly directions as the original pattern; except that I only made 7 rows of 4 blocks! The pattern called for using a jelly roll for the strips inside the blocks/mirrors, so that's pretty free-wheeling. I was searching for a specific look and only used six fabrics in my blocks which I cut from yardage. This is the third project I made, so I'd say it was relatively easy to make. It might be suitable for a kit.
