Instructions

Elissa's bonus instruction on making wood floor helped me figure out how to make the cake look like a wooden tray.

Difficulty:

Category: Cake Decorating

Type of item: Food

For: Other

Style: Funky

Materials

Cake, fondant, gumpaste.

What was your inspiration?

I was asked to make a sushi cake for a sushi restaurant owner for his 50th birthday. I was given a picture of a sushi cake made by Ace of Cakes as a reference, and I also looked online for other sushi cakes and tried to combine ideas from all cakes.

What are you most proud of?

pretty much everything ;) considering that I'm a newbie and self taught, I was very proud of the outcome...
However I'm a little bit disappointed from the wrinkles that appeared in the middle of the cake when I took it off the turn table- but now I know how to avoid this for next time....

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

make the gumpaste decorations in advance, make a few extras from the delicate ones, such as the sticks and the green grass, and use e large enough turn table so that the weight of the cake won't pull it down from the sides and cause wrinkle or even tearing of the fondant in the middle. In other words, support the cake from all parts, not just from the middle.
