Surplice Dress

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Sewing With Knits: 5 Wardrobe Essentials »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Women

Style: Casual

Materials

A slinky, very stretchy knit from darn cheap fabrics

What are you most proud of?

These are my very first sleeves!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

I have only been sewing 5mths and I found it pretty easy! Don't choose a really slinky fabric like I did, unless you enjoy fiddling with it. I knew this fabric wouldn't be fun to work with but I knew it would look sweet and drape beautifully

Gorgeous. I'm taking this class now. I'll be interested to see how I can make it work for me. It's nice seeing it in a not-size-two size.

Seems worth working slinky fabric. Great looks. You made me want to keep sewing this class.

great dress, I love that fabric. It looks like the ends of a spool of fabric ;)

Thank you! I love the fabric too, I thought it looked like it was printed with reels of thread!

A rolled hem its a breeze & looks very professional. You may want to consider using Wooly nylon in the lower loopers of the serger. Very pretty dress. Nice job!

Thank you. I bought the fabric ages but couldn't find the right thing to sew with it, I knew this dress would be perfect for it.

hank you. Is wooly nylon easy to use? I keep meaning to buy some but there is only one place locally that sells it and I don't go there often.

Very cool print. I think a tiny serger hem would be great and way easier then to fiddle with a twin needle.

Thank you! I really love the print too, it's very slightly shiny. I think I'm going to go rolled hem.

Wow, your dress looks amazing! Working with a difficult to handle fabric was definitely worth it for the end result.

Thank you! I haven't done the hem yet as I couldn't decide on how to hem it without losing the flow of the fabric. I'm thinking a rolled overlocker/serger hem?
