Sunset Sampler

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Stupendous Stitching: Adventures in Surface Design »

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Mod

Materials

Hand-dyed batik, Fuse & Stitch stabilizer, various threads, flat ribbon yarns & silk ribbons

What was your inspiration?

The Craftsy instruction and samples, plus the colorful fabric I chose, which reminds me of a sunset. Also the novelty flat wide ribbon I used inspired me to mimic its distinctive weave with a similar looking decorative stitch.

What are you most proud of?

I'm proud of stacking stitches, first couching the 7 mm wide silk ribbon with a ladder stitch, and then stitching over that with a variegated thread deco stitch pattern. I also found that a wide ribbon type alpaca yarn I couched looked a little dull so I satin-stitched down the center with 60 wt. poly thread whose variegated colors remind me of tiny beads.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Follow the video and let your imagination carry you through!

This is a wonderful piece. I love how you did decorative machine stitching over the ribbon!

Thank you Carol! I just finished quilting with Holoshimmer thread, which gives it a whole new dimension, both on the front and the contrasting black backing. In fact, I would like to mount it somehow so that both sides could be displayed. Is there a way to support it in a kind of open frame?

I really enjoyed my first attempt, which I did before watching the hand embroidery lesson--I just don't care much for that! But I will watch all the lessons and maybe try hand work on my next project--coming up soon! Thanks Carol for your instruction and inspiration!
