Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Girls

Style: Traditional, Cute, Classic, Retro / Vintage

Materials

Old hand-appliqued sunbonnet sue (or called Dutch doll) squares. Cut them down and fused to interfacing.

What was your inspiration?

Antique sunbonnet sue girls hand appliqued.

What are you most proud of?

The new Amy Butler background fabric gives it a retro chic look. My friend who owns the girls picked out the fabric and I think the pairing turned out great. These colors pair the orange and pink girls with the Gypsy Caravan fat quarters. I am working on another one using a different colorway of the same line. This one may be even prettier!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Don't hold yourself to 'rules'. For example, using 30s repro fabrics for the background would have been logical. But pairing the old with the new turned out amazing results!!!!

I used a paper-backed fusible web. You can find it at Joann fabric, Hancock, or a local quilt store or online. Make sure you get lightweight. After you iron on the fusible web to the back of the girl you fuse (iron) it to the background fabric - this holds it in place. Follow the directions for the fusible web you buy, ie what temp iron, steam or no steam, etc. I then machine stitched all the way around. I chose black thread because that is what the stitching was on the girls' bonnets and that was the style in the 30s, etc. You can use matching thread if you like. The stitching around it is called a 'blanket stitch'. If your machine doesn't have that stitch you can do it by hand. I have another project that I will post that has the applique hand done.

I started a Sun bonnet Sue quilt a few months ago. I keep taking it out and putting it away. I am not sure what way to go. I have no instructions. Do I put a facing on the back of the applique, Or just sew all the way around it.? Help me.
