Summer Dress

Learn It

This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
The Couture Dress »

Instructions

I am a plus-sized person, so I have to make significant alternations to the pattern before I start. I am using Swedish pattern paper to draft new pattern pieces to make sure the proportions are correct before making the muslin.

Difficulty:

Category: Sewing

Type of item: Clothing

For: Plus-sized

Style: Retro / Vintage, Cute

Materials

Silk organza for the interlining, a sateen poplin for the dress in a green/white pattern. I may also make a second version with a purple multi-colored fashion fabric.

What was your inspiration?

Susan Khalje is my inspiration! Her down-to-earth teaching style and approachability make learning couture sewing seem the most natural process in the world. I am also inspired by many sewist bloggers out there who are making their own fabulous clothes.

What are you most proud of?

Just signing up for the Couture Dress class and making a project for myself! I usually sew for other people, so turning the focus on myself is new for me.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Just do it! I think anyone can sew. The prep time is what puts people off, but I find the prep time (pattern adjustments, muslin-making, etc) is like solving a puzzle. Putting a dress together is like a fabric-based game of Tetris - you have to make the pieces fit!

Dang it, back problems can be awful. I am in SC, and yes it has been nice here still so I am sure you will be able to wear it when you finish it. What was your ideas to get rid of the extra fullness just under the arms?

I really don't have an idea for that. Yet. Armscyes are my mortal enemies for the moment. But I will come out on top eventually

Armscyes are my mortal enemies at the moment. But I will come out on top! Once the light bulb comes on, I"ll be off and running!

I have not been able to finish the dress YET. I will. I injured my back and have been in too much pain to do much but go to work and then to bed. Fortunately, I finally had an MRI and got in to see a spine doctor so I'm healing as I write this! I don't have anything major wrong, so I'll be back to sewing SOON! I have missed it. So, once I have more pics, and get the dress a little further down the way, I'll post them. Thanks!

Not yet. I'm feeling better and my back has improved greatly, so I will be completing the dress soon. Fortunately, I live in the South, so I'll have several more months of hot weather in which to wear it!
