I am a plus-sized person, so I have to make significant alternations to the pattern before I start. I am using Swedish pattern paper to draft new pattern pieces to make sure the proportions are correct before making the muslin.Difficulty:
Category: Sewing
Type of item: Clothing
For: Plus-sized
Style: Retro / Vintage, Cute
Materials
Silk organza for the interlining, a sateen poplin for the dress in a green/white pattern. I may also make a second version with a purple multi-colored fashion fabric.
What was your inspiration?
Susan Khalje is my inspiration! Her down-to-earth teaching style and approachability make learning couture sewing seem the most natural process in the world. I am also inspired by many sewist bloggers out there who are making their own fabulous clothes.
What are you most proud of?
Just signing up for the Couture Dress class and making a project for myself! I usually sew for other people, so turning the focus on myself is new for me.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Just do it! I think anyone can sew. The prep time is what puts people off, but I find the prep time (pattern adjustments, muslin-making, etc) is like solving a puzzle. Putting a dress together is like a fabric-based game of Tetris - you have to make the pieces fit!
