What advice would you give someone starting this project?
When in doubt, ask for a little help from your friends!!
This is very pretty and I like it very much, but I do think the big squares could do with a "little something" (but then, I have to stop myself from over-gilding the lily, and often don't know when to stop!). I think, if it were mine, I might make some little clusters (perhaps three in each square?) of Suffolk Puffs (I think you may know them as Yo-Yos). I'd stitch them down to be fairly flat (a bit like the one I put on my BOM quilt). This would give a slightly 3-dimensional look, but without adding too much bulk. Just an idea ...
Thank you. I would never have thought of yoyos! I need to ponder this more.
Love this! Pretty sure this is the same block I used on a lap quilt recently.
Yes, you did. I think it was a wheelchair lap quilt. Love the block!
I vote with those who say leave as is and FMQ in the white squares. I think anything additional would take away from the beautiful, rich blend of colors you've created.
Thank you. the response has been overwhelmingly in favor of leaving things as they are.
Each of your ideas is a winner. I can see FMQ, making it a great table topper. It would look great in the dining room with a huge vase of peonies.
Chuckle: When I was single, I hosted a small dinner and dressed the table in a hunk of folded plaid wool. It looked so cool. It was still clean after the dnner, and actually no harm done--so I made a jacket out of it. Wore it to work with navy slacks for years! I used to tell people it was my dinner jacket. They never got the joke!
You have such a brilliant imagination. Peonies would be so perfect with this! It must be artist in you. I love the wool tablecloth/jacket! You must always have been resourceful! The most fun I ever had with fabric started with a yellow tablecloth. When I through it into the wash everything came out a gorgeous, bright yellow. When I discovered the magical properties of this tablecloth my sister in-law and I promptly dyed all of our underwear 3 of my babies diapers that happy shade of sunshine..
Oops, spelling error! Should have been "threw it into the wash". lol
Hi 2strings! I came back to this lovely little quilt today and wondered if you had decided what to do? After reading the comments you've received and looking again at the quality of work you do I think you can pull of something pretty spectacular here. I'm now imagining something really special in each of those white blocks - perhaps using colored threads? Regardless of what you decide I'm looking forward to it!
Thank you for the encouragement and the nice words. I'm doing a very simple motif in the center of the blocks with pebbles surrounding it. All white - very, very plain. I'm still afraid of FMQ with colors and I'm not totally confident in my ability to follow a complex template. I still need a lot more practice.
