Quilting: Suggestions anyone?

Suggestions anyone?

Is this your project? Can you share instructions or a pattern with the Craftsy community?

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Home

Style: Traditional

What was your inspiration?

I had some of these wonderful Kaffe Fassett prints left, so I put them into this little divided 4-patch quilt. Now I'm stuck. I don't know how to finish it, and I'd like your opinions. It's only a little quilt - 41" x 49", and I have tons of options. The white squares are 6". So chime in, please and help me out.

Here are some of my choices:
1. Leave it as it is and use my slowly growing FMQ skills to quilt.
2. Applique little flowers into the 6" squares.
3. Make it a baby quilt with cute little animals or children in the white squares.
4. Make it a beach quilt with flip-flops, sunglasses, beach umbrella, etc. in the white sections.
5. Turn it into a "closet" quilt - dresses, shoes, purses, etc. in the white squares.
6. Something different than any of these?

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

When in doubt, ask for a little help from your friends!!

Each of your ideas is a winner. I can see FMQ, making it a great table topper. It would look great in the dining room with a huge vase of peonies. Chuckle: When I was single, I hosted a small dinner and dressed the table in a hunk of folded plaid wool. It looked so cool. It was still clean after the dnner, and actually no harm done--so I made a jacket out of it. Wore it to work with navy slacks for years! I used to tell people it was my dinner jacket. They never got the joke!

You have such a brilliant imagination. Peonies would be so perfect with this! It must be artist in you. I love the wool tablecloth/jacket! You must always have been resourceful! The most fun I ever had with fabric started with a yellow tablecloth. When I through it into the wash everything came out a gorgeous, bright yellow. When I discovered the magical properties of this tablecloth my sister in-law and I promptly dyed all of our underwear 3 of my babies diapers that happy shade of sunshine..

I vote with those who say leave as is and FMQ in the white squares. I think anything additional would take away from the beautiful, rich blend of colors you've created.

Thank you. the response has been overwhelmingly in favor of leaving things as they are.

Love this! Pretty sure this is the same block I used on a lap quilt recently.

Yes, you did. I think it was a wheelchair lap quilt. Love the block!

This is very pretty and I like it very much, but I do think the big squares could do with a "little something" (but then, I have to stop myself from over-gilding the lily, and often don't know when to stop!). I think, if it were mine, I might make some little clusters (perhaps three in each square?) of Suffolk Puffs (I think you may know them as Yo-Yos). I'd stitch them down to be fairly flat (a bit like the one I put on my BOM quilt). This would give a slightly 3-dimensional look, but without adding too much bulk. Just an idea ...

Thank you. I would never have thought of yoyos! I need to ponder this more.

I like it the way it is. But i am pretty much a traditional quilter and i really like the idea of the open space to put a pretty quilting design in. But i love the quilt.

Thank you! So far everyone has been of the same opinion. That must mean something.

I LOVE this 2strings! The way the blocks extend into the sashing is fantastic - never heard of a divided 4 patch but now I'm going to have to do one. As for finishing - I vote for an overall meandering FMQ - something that won't take away from the blocks and construction itself. But then again I'm still pretty much a newbie. Just make sure that whatever you decide makes you happy :D

Thank you. I really like the effect of this pattern, too. It was quick to make and easy - no triangles! I love getting your opinions. Add nothing seems be the consensus today.

I am taking you up on your invitation here! I would say your first suggestion is the best idea. (Subconsciously you might have thought so too since you listed it first!) I think the white squares provide an excellent opportunity for design in the quilting phase of things, and then you could even do some of those neat motifs like flowers or animals, just in quilting instead of applique. Every quilt or fabric I see with flipflops on them looks silly. I prefer them for footwear not decor, but I now I may be overstepping my bounds of opinion-giving. I think the patchwork is very successful as it is. I can't wait to see how you quilt it! Hope I helped in your decision-making process.

Thank you so much! You and my husband share the same opinion.

I had an oops moment when I saw (afterwards) that you had a quilt with flipflops on it, so I kinda put my foot in my mouth with that one. It was a cute quilt though, but all the more reason to do this one different, huh? If you take Angela Walters Negative space class or just look at her blog, you will get a lot of ideas for quilting the empty space. Again, good luck and I like it the way it is, composition-wise.

Cat, you didn't hurt my feeling one little bit with the flip-flop comment! Isn't it wonderful that we are all so different from one another? How boring this world would be if everyone chose the same everything!

I am glad. I think the crafting arena can only benefit from people sharing their thoughts on design with each other, When you hear other people's opinions it gives you more clarity on your own when you arrive at a decision. I will probably be needing some "votes" on sashing colors etc...here pretty soon.
