That is just beautiful; I really like the color on the white background. I'm working on my stitch bible with color on white - just because that's what I already had, and I'm really liking it. I'm sooooooo jealous of your French knots!! It seems that we don't agree with each other that much... :( Anyway, I'll keep trying!

yay!! a quilt! (did you use the same stabilizer, or did you use a tear-way or a water soluble?)
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
Sep 04, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
Yes, I used my regular interfacing - Pellon 731TD which is pretty lightweight so I didn't bother to remove it. But water soluble could also work. Personally, I find tear-away too difficult to "tear away" but I haven't tried it for several years. Perhaps it's gotten better.

Is there a way that I can order the book (Stupendous Stitching) without ordering the whole kit? One of my goals with this class is to find a way to use some of my threads, etc. that are in my supplies.

How did you make the wonky wedge strips? Did you piece each and every little wedge or do something quicker and easier?
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
Sep 03, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
It's a little complicated to explain (easy to demo!) but it's a free hand cutting technique where you lay two strips on top of each other and make slices using a rotary cutter. Then, you alternate each piece so you have two strips. Then you piece them together. It's fun and fast (not to mention wonky!

Start: I really like it. Did you use that circle creation tool for Bernina or free hand those, they look so regular. I think it would work if I did it in brighter colors. Panamanians want brilliant colors and contrasts. I even have begun to see color combos that way, Great idea. Still working on my stitch bible because I have so many stitches to go it is sort of silly. No one needs 400 stitches. I used some of the techniques you taught in Stupendous Stitching on some crazy quilt purses that the women made for a sustainable income project. Just teaching them to see those few decorator stitches differently was a big deal and to make a stitch bible. They all learned a lot about their machines and their capabilities. Now they are making free form flower wall hangings and they all are using decorator stitches for stems, leaf details etc. It is exciting to watch them grow and change. :End

Carol, the circles are wonderful. I love circle designs and color - what a combo. I am not a sashing type person - How would just a small (2") border with bright solids on each block work? I guess that would be sort of a sashing. Did you do the regular stitch lines first and then fill in the spaces with the dec stitches? It's so good to hear that you use the simple tools we have - rather than the fancy circular foot. I hope to try this - I know I cannot do so many of the same blocks - so it will probably be a tote or bag front and back. You are a talented, freeing artist. Blessings
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
Sep 03, 2012   Flag as inappropriate

Hi Carol Ann, Love love love this! I don't see any couching on this piece. The couching was my favorite thing on my Stupendous Stitching project. Would couching something like rat tail cord be difficult on this to match up the ends? Or is there a certain reason you didn't do couching on this? (Alternatively, am I just blind and can't see it...lol)
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
Sep 02, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
No, you are not blind -- I didn't do any couching on this piece. It goes to show you don't have to do all three techniques every time. However, a thick cord like rattail would be difficult to use in a circular design because of joining the ends. I have used thinner cords quite successfully in circles (like embroidery thread). Be bork, Be brace! Experiment!

Quilt is beautiful! Two Questions?? Did you quilt through the "quilt sandwich" ?? IF so did you use the walking foot... Or did you do the stitching on the top then put the sandwich together and quilt a bit??
Carol Ann Waugh on craftsy.com
Sep 02, 2012   Flag as inappropriate
I did all the decorative machine stitching and embroidery first. then I attached the sashing. Then I put the quilt sandwich together and free motion stitched using a darning foot. Can't remember when I ever used a walking foot but when I need one, I switch to my Pfaff and that the built in walking foot. Much easier to use than the Bernina attachment.

Wow. I must be channeling my needlepointed couch that I made in my 20's after I returned from a vacation in Mexico! Amazing how the mind works.

What fun, Carol Ann! Even though I've not yet finished my stitch bible, I already find myself referring to it and have used it in combination with variations from your four-fabric class. They'll eventually become Alzheimer's Priority Quilts to help raise money for Alzheimer's research through Ami Simms' Alzheimer's Art Qult Initiative.

Good question! I didn't measure it but I would guess the blocks are 10" and the sashing around 4" so that would make it about 46" square.

I love quilt. Great idea. I'm sure having fun with stupendous stitching. It's working its way into many of my art quilts. I really like to do the hand stitching and it contrasts to well with the machine stitches.
