I crumb coated it and then I put little icing and rotate spatula back and forth ..I hope my answer make sense :( I don't know how to describe this technique :)

Did you let your buttercream crust a bit before you did the technique?

I used Swiss meriunge butter cream ,after the first smooth coat I put cake in the fridge for about half an hour and then I applied stucco texture
