Scrap Quilting »

Instructions

Quilts of this type are discussed in the Craftsy scrap quilting class. I made this quilt before signing up for the class, but found the instructions free on the internet, at Quiltville.com, if I remember correctly. I made the quilt several years ago. I'm looking forward to picking up additional hints from the Craftsy class!

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Functional

For: Home

Style: Whimsical, Casual

Materials

Scraps from stash, recycled phone book pages for foundations for making blocks

What was your inspiration?

I had lots and lots of small scraps left from other quilting projects. I searched the Internet for ideas for using scraps to make a quilt. There were lots of fabrics with cats used in this quilt, so I used a paw print for the border.

What are you most proud of?

I managed to make a dent in my stash, and I pieced leftover batting. I didn't spend any extra money making this king-sized quilt. I quilted it on my domestic machine.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

It's very doable, but takes a little patience.

My mother taught me how to make this quilt 40 years ago but I never got past the first square. She told me to soak the piece in water to remove the paper. Do you have a better method? I am now inspired to try this again.

I found it very easy to just pull the paper strips off while I was watching TV or listening to an audiobook. Like Pepper says in the lessons, I used an OLD phone book. The pages were thin and brittle. I tore off very, very easily and no water was necessary.

I'm glad you like it. I thought it was so wild that nobody would use it except under another quilt, or in the dark, but the friend who adopted it loves the bright colors and uses it on top!

The quilt speaks for you being a very patient person!!I can only imagine how long you took to make it.Do you know how long it took you?(or I assume like the Amish say " many, many hours.")I love how bright and beautiful it is!!!!!

I don't actually remember, but it wasn't a slow process at all. It was one of the faster quilts I've made. You don't have to measure or accurately cut the pieces you are sewing to the phone book pages, and you just trim each block up to size. I did use graph paper to decide what color the center strips in each block would be so that I could have those consistent as they went around the center. It was one of the easier quilts I've ever made.
