What was your inspiration?
While visiting family in Newfoundland, Canada (2003); I found this material. As my sister had recently moved there with her husband, I felt I should create a quilt for them. While flying home, I sat with pen and paper and started creating what I might want to do for this quilt. The main material looked like stormy waves and the secondary had Orca Whales in it. I decided that sail boats were just the thing to create.
What are you most proud of?
This was my very first pattern I had ever tried to create. I was new to quilting (2001) and really my measurements were a struggle with the half square triangles; not sure I had ever made any at that time. I tried a trial square and felt it was okay, so I created 11 more to go with it. It took me 9 years to complete, as there were times I really didn't like it that much. I persevered and now it is ready to give as the gift I had intended. Actually very proud of the quilt.
What advice would you give someone starting this project?
Any quilt that you want to create, just take chances and enjoy building it.
