This project was made as part of a Craftsy course:
Magical Jelly Roll Quilts »

Instructions

Press, cut precisely, press more, press flat, cut precisely, sew precisely, You get the idea.

Difficulty:

Category: Quilting

Type of item: Home Decor

For: Charity

Style: Casual, Mod, Whimsical, Funky

Materials

Cotton fabric, thread. More materials when completed.

What was your inspiration?

I love the bright colors in this colection and thought they'd look great on the blue background.

What are you most proud of?

Getting the star put together despite the raw edges of the diamonds being uneven. I was able to ease them into the background fabric. And my perfect points!

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Watch the entire 2 episodes of the video all the way through. Read the instructions, then watch again. I took a lot of video notes and found stopping and starting wasn't very helpful. At times I thought I'd better go back to newbie status! This has been a very challenging project for me.

All the colors are beautiful, but I especially like the addition of the green fabric in the checker-boarder. Well done!

Thanks Kimberly - I'm still up in the airon the final fabrics for the checkerboard. May end up using more than two...

Wasa --- and no changing back...this is gorgeous work. I vote for the yellow and green...I think. They are all great. Hate it when we are short a fabric to make it FABULOUS.....but it happens. But, sometimes it works out even better

I hate it too. I'm still trying to eke out enough squares in that large floral print - but only have enough for half the border. The scale and contrast have the potential of taking away from the star. I may have to settle on this one.

I should say I hate not having the fabric I want - not the project!

Jean, I can't wait to start doing this course - it is all a learning curve for me and I am so grateful that I can do it in my own time. Still am waiting to buy a layer cake to go with my jelly roll for the Jacob's Ladder quilt. I am itching to get started but it is a matter of baby steps at the moment. I appreciate all the advice I am getting from the wonderful people, like yourself, doing these courses and seeing all the possibilities that quilting offers.

Hey Beth- I did this one by cutting strips from a small FQ bundle. The background came from "mistake" yardage. So I didn't have to buy fabric! I'm really looking forward to seeing your MJR work. I SO love it that you can work at your own pace and have these classes for life! Yeah Craftsy!

Just got here -- yikes -- this looks way hard (and way cool). My vote is for the green and the yellow, fabrics 2 and 3. And... don't even *think* about changing your name back! LOL -- great work on this; looking forward to the next installment.

Actually Alyx it's made of 3 strips from a Jelly Roll (in my case 6 cut from FQs). It requires a lot of accurate attention to detail. Thanks for your feedback and for the time being i'll stick with Wasa! :D

I definitely would use the fabric with the green background w/ yellow flowers. All your other colors are in that one too, even the blue. Since "Starry Starry Night" is all about motion, I think this one really keeps your eye moving. The white print would work well with the green too

Hi Ladybev- Let's just say I've now made a resolution: "NO MORE NEW PROJECTS" until I finish those I've already started. This one is on the list and I'm about half way done!

Further on the checkerboard. I have to choose from the 3 selections for the checkerboard. I really like fabric 2 with the green background. Should I pair it with fabric 1 or fabric 3. I''d love to use the large floral print but don't have enough fabric. Also don't have enough to do those nifty corner pieces. :-( I squeezed out four sqaure patch units for the corners. But I'm still up in the air on the checkerboard.

Love the blue background - I think I also would go with the flower print for the border presuming you have enough fabric and then a plain binding. I am new to this quilting thing so I could well be wrong.

Thanks Beth. Really wish I had enough of that big print. This all came from a small Fat Quarter bundle which equates to little yardage to work with.

BTW Beth - I'm learning you can't be/go wrong in quilting - as long as YOU are happy with what you do! That's the most important thing.

PS: Anybody know how to turn this on point, actually slightly turn - so a point would go straight up - 3 to each side, and one going straight down? I can probably cut a big square and just turn the block but maybe someone knows how to do this?

OK- I need help with deciding on fabric to use for the checkerboard edge. Which two of the three potentials do you like together? Thanks Crafty members! Oh- forgot to mention the corner piece. It was a serendipity find when I first cut the diamonds BACKWARDS! If I have enough fabric I plan to put one on each corner.

I like pulling the green and yellow from the center into the border, I love the idea for the corner piece, hope you have enough fabric. Keep us posted.

If it were me, I would also consider using that great flower print as the border (if you have enough). But then I'm partial to colorful big flower prints - - But I do like dkaym's green/yellow idea also

That corner piece idea is just what I needed for an entirely different project! Now if I can just figure out how you did it! As I understand it, you're not actually doing the checkerboard border but rather you plan to leave these strips as they are, which is what I'd call a piano key border. Often you see the intersection (the corner) mitered on a piano key border but I like your corner!

OK mayflowermama - To make the mitered corner: Sew 2 sets of 2 strips together, making sure one strip matches in each set. Press well then stack the 2 strip sets RST. The matching fabrics should NOT face each other. Feel with your fingers to match up the seams and cut a clean edge. Move the ruler in and cut a clean 45 degree angle across the stacked strips When you open the strips they form the mitered corner. Simply sew the cut angles together and trim the length as desired to match your side/bottom borders. Hope this is clear..
