Make It

This project was made from an independent Craftsy designer's pattern:
Stag Beetle »

Difficulty:

Category: Knitting

Type of item: Toy

For: Children

Style: Outdoorsy, Cute

Materials

Wool and acetate

What was your inspiration?

We get wild stag beetles where I live, though they are getting more and more rare. Although some people think they are scary, they are really quite beautiful. Apparently they live in wood at the larva stage for 5-7 years, and have only a short time being beetles.

I also designed my pattern as I wanted to do an insect that I don't think has been done by anyone else, though I may be wrong about this.

What are you most proud of?

I did at first try to knit the horns and legs, but this proved too tricky. I am quite pleased with my compromise of sewing the body parts about a frame. The outline for the frame is part of the pattern.

What advice would you give someone starting this project?

Be careful if you buy acetate that you get the right sort! I made this mistake. A cheaper and just as good method is to use the black plastic food container.
